J. Bouchon Family Wines is a Chilean winery located in the Valle del Maule.
The history of the estate began almost 150 years ago when a young and adventurous Frenchman, Emile Bouchon, left the small family vineyard in his native Gironde to board a ship bound for Chile in April 1887.
His grandson, Julio Bouchon, who had returned to Chile after studying oenology in Bordeaux, decided to expand his grandfather's project and began looking for a new terroir. He chose a small vineyard dating from the 19th century, planted with old vines on granite soils, in the rather arid interior part of the Valle de Maule. Julio and his sister María are giving a new lease of life to the family estate, experimenting with new grape varieties, reviving old ones and modernizing winemaking methods.
In 2013, the Bouchon family joined forces with the Nieuwoudt family, owners of Cederberg in South Africa, to create the Longavi project and develop a range of Chilean wines blending different grape varieties and planting areas.
In 2015, the fourth generation of the Bouchon family decided to regain their freedom and relaunch their own wines under the name "Las Mercedes".
The estate extends over 3 different vineyards: Mingre is a 50-hectare vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Carménère, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Carignan, País, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Batuco covers 22 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Sémillon (18%). Santa Rosa covers 90 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec and Chardonnay.
Water management is particularly severe, as part of the vineyard is fed exclusively by rainwater.
