US wines, American wines, wines from the USA

If American vines saved the French vineyard when it was almost completely destroyed by phylloxera in the second half of the 19th century, it is a more recent news item that is at the origin of the fame of American and more precisely Californian wines in the world: the famous Paris judgment of 1976 which consecrated several great American wines against the greatest wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

California, 90% of America's vineyards

The Californian vineyard represents 90% of the 230,000 hectares of American vineyards and is often referred to by its two major wine regions: Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley.
Napa Valley developed starting in the 1960s, with pioneers like Robert Mondavi, and became the home of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.
Sonoma Valley has developed more recently and benefits from cooler terroirs between mountain ranges and the Pacific Ocean, with renowned regions such as Chalk Hill for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, Knights Valley mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast celebrated for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Dry Creek Valley where Zinfandel is the king varietal. The latter is emblematic of California where it represents 10% of the vineyard.

Oregon and Washington State, rising stars of American wines

In just over 30 years, Oregon has become the ideal terroir to produce great wines from Pinot Noir, with estates such as Ken Wright or Archery Summit. Several Burgundian producers such as Drouhin have also settled there.
As for Washington State, it has experienced the strongest growth in recent years in terms of vineyard area and produces wines with the classic Californian grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay).

White wines from the East Coast

The cold climate of the northeastern United States offers good production conditions for dry and sweet white wines made from the Riesling and Pinot Gris grape varieties, as well as amazing ice wines such as in neighboring Canada.
