The Drappier Champagne House was founded in 1808 in Urville in the Côte des Bar by François Drappier. The estate's cellars were built in the 12th century by Saint Bernard, founder of the Abbey of Clairvaux. The vineyard now covers 55 hectares of vines, 70% of which are planted with Pinot Noir, plus 50 hectares under associated contracts.
It was not until the 1930s that Georges Collot, maternal grandfather of Michel, the current director of Maison Drappier, was the first to decide to replant Pinot Noir in this part of the Champagne region, a decision that made people smile at the time. In 1952, André and Micheline Drappier launched the mythical Carte d'Or cuvée, then came the terrible frost of 1957 which destroyed almost the entire harvest and which pushed André to plant Pinot Meunier, which is more resistant to spring cold. In 1968, the Rosé cuvée was born, but only from Pinot Noir. Michel and Sylvie have recently been joined at the estate by their children Charline, Hugo and Antoine, the eighth generation of the family.
In addition to the three main Champagne grape varieties, Maison Drappier continues to cultivate forgotten grape varieties of Champagne such as Arbane, Petit Meslier and Blanc Vrai. It is also renowned for the production of large bottle formats, including the 27-litre Primate, which it is the only one to make, and the 30-litre Melchizedek.
