GREAT BRITAIN

Découvrir les vins de Grande-Bretagne avec La Bouteille Dorée

While Britain has long been considered too cold and wet to be able to grow vines, even though the Romans introduced them to the country a long time ago, today there are nearly 500 wineries in England and Wales, with a total area of about 1500 hectares (2014), which produce still and sparkling wines whose quality continues to grow.

From 1950, British viticulture was reborn with pioneers such as Ray Barrington Brock, but it is especially since the early 2000s that the growth of British wines is spectacular, in volume and especially in quality, with the decline of the old grape varieties of Germanic origin (Reichensteiner, Schönburger, Bacchus or Dornfelder) in favor of the great northern grape varieties of Champagne and Burgundy in France: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

Although the vineyards extend as far north as the country, in the Midlands and Yorkshire, it is well to the south, on the limestone soils, that we find the best estates that produce still and especially sparkling wines made from the Champagne grape varieties.  Nyetimber is one such estate, located in the South Downs, which has been producing great sparkling wines since 1992 and perhaps one of the most recognised in the world.
