Delta Vineyard was born from the meeting in 1994, in northern Italy, of Matt Thomson, who was then making his first vintage, and David Gleave, an importer of world wines in London. Convinced of the potential of Pinot Noir in the Marlborough region of New Zealand, they prospected the region and in 2000, bought 40 hectares of vines planted exclusively with Pinot Noir. The name of the estate, Delta, refers to the shape of the landscapes and the vineyard that evokes the Greek letter.
The Marlborough region, also famous for its Sauvignon white wines, offers more consistent weather conditions than Central Otago in the south or Martinborough in the north island, with cool nights and warm days, ideal for Pinot Noir.
Delta Vineyard is now known for its beautiful, fine and firm Pinot Noirs, typical of New Zealand's fine red wines. The estate produces two cuvées: the first in a fruity and fresh style and the second, Hatter's Hill, more concentrated, from a selection of the best plots.
