Château d'Issan is a Bordeaux wine in the Margaux appellation and 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855.
The current property dates from the 17th century and succeeded the fortified castle of the seigneury of La Mothe-Cantenac built in the 12th century. Issan wine was already known at that time, as it is reported that it was served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet, the future King of England, on May 18, 1152.
The current vines were planted between 1975 and 1985, following the great efforts that the Cruse family, who acquired the estate in 1945, have since undertaken to restructure the vineyard and the cellars. In 2012, Françoise and Jacky Lorenzetti, owners of Château Lilian Ladouys in Saint-Estèphe and Château Pedesclaux in Pauillac, joined forces with the Cruse family.
The estate now owns 59 hectares of vines, 44 of which are on the beautiful Margaux terroir, combining ideal climatic conditions and clay soils with gravel on the surface. The wines are aged in barrels for 16 to 18 months, 50% of which are new.
