At the head of the estate, Jean-Michel Deiss has been an ardent defender for many years of complantation, i.e. the art of blending grape varieties in a terroir. Certainly the oldest known form of viticulture in Europe, Alsace abandoned it in the course of the 20th century for varietal wines.
For Jean-Michel Deiss, returning to complanting means promoting the biological diversity of vineyards. His perseverance and the stubbornness of a few other winegrowers made it possible, in 2005, to reform the 1975 legislation, the mention of the grape variety now being optional in Alsace AOC and Grand Cru.
The word comes back to the expression of the wonderful Alsatian terroirs of the Domaine. Marl, gravel or Jurassic limestone give complex wines, of incredible intensity and balance and rewarded by the best guides and the greatest restaurants.
