The grape variety of the great red wines of Savoie

Mondeuse noire is a grape variety from Savoie that almost disappeared in the 19th century with phylloxera. It is now found in Savoie, Bugey and Ain and also in Switzerland on very small plots of land, on clay-limestone soils. In the Arbin and Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte appellations, it is vinified on its own but it is also used in blends with Gamay or Pinot Noir.

How do you recognise Mondeuse wines?

Related to Syrah, Mondeuse produces wines that, when young, offer a beautiful acidity and reveal powerful aromas of red and black fruits (blackcurrant, raspberry, black cherry), violets, and spicy notes of white pepper. With age, the tannins, sometimes a little harsh at first, become rounded out and the aromas evolve towards truffle and undergrowth.

How long do I keep them and how do I serve them?

Mondeuse wines are wines with which you have to be a little patient: they can be enjoyed with at least 2 to 3 years of ageing and offer, for the best wines, an ageing of 10 to 15 years.
Young wines can be decanted at least 1 hour before tasting.
