1984 was a difficult vintage in most vineyards in France and Europe. In this context, the very great wines always fare a little better than the others, but the wines of Bordeaux 1984, mainly in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, and even more so those of Burgundy 1984, Rhône 1984 or Champagne vintage 1984, have remained quite thin and the vast majority of these wines have now passed.

The quality and reputation of an estate are not everything and in this small 1984 vintage, the price of some of the 1984 Grands Crus Classés remains very high and is not justified in view of their limited taste interest, more than 30 years after their bottling.

In France, the greatest classified growths of the Médoc in Bordeaux, in the Haut-Médoc, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac or Saint-Estèphe appellations are still pleasant to taste and a great Château 1984 du Médoc is still the best bet if the price is reasonable. The wines of Roussillon are not to be neglected, in particular the oxidative natural sweet red wines of Maury or Rivesaltes with very long ageing potential, which still offer beautiful sensations in this vintage.
