Clos des Papes is a famous Rhône wine estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation that has belonged to the Avril family since the 15th century and is certified organic.
The vineyard covers 32 hectares, including a historic 4-hectare plot at the foot of the papal castle. It is made up of old vines between 50 and 80 years old, divided into 24 plots.
In the second half of the 19th century, Paul Avril contributed to the birth of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and the estate as it exists today, with his first cuvée in 1896. It is currently run by Paul-Vincent Avril, who worked for Château Mouton Rothschild and Domaine Ott near Bandol before taking over the family vineyard.
