Château Rieussec is a Sauternes wine estate, adjacent to Château d'Yquem, which extends over 93 hectares and whose great sweet white wine is classified as a Premier Grand Cru. The grape varieties are classic of the appellation with Sémillon for 90%, complemented by Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Yields are very low.
The history of Château Rieussec began when the Domaine de Rieussec was sold as a "National Asset" during the Revolution in 1790, to Mr. Marheilhac, also owner of Château La Louvière in Léognan. Multiple owners then succeeded each other for nearly 2 centuries until the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Château Lafite Rothschild) acquired it in 1984. The vineyard is now managed by Eric Kohler.
Since then, many investments have been made in the vineyard and in the cellars: more rigorous sorting of the grapes, fermentation in barrels and lengthening of the ageing period from the 1989 vintage, reduction in the quantity of great wine produced. Château Rieussec will not produce the great wine in vintages that do not offer sufficient quality, such as 1993, 1977 or 2012.
Château Rieussec 2001 was awarded by Wine Spectator magazine as "Wine of the Year" for 2004.
