Jim Clendenen created the "Bon Climat" estate in 1982 and for more than 40 years has been producing white wines of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris and red wines of Pinot Noir internationally recognized and sought after by wine lovers all over the world: balance and complexity are the two words that best represent his wines.
Born in Akron, Ohio, Jim Clendenen left for France at the age of 21 and his stays in Burgundy and Champagne pushed him to turn to the world of wine. In 1978, back in the United States, he spent 3 years learning his trade at Zaca Mesa Winery and then in 1982 decided to create his own estate by renting land.
In 1998, he acquired his own vineyard with 45 hectares in Sisquoc, along the south bank of the Sisquoc River, ideally located between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Maria Valley, mainly on top of the hills.
The estate is managed in sustainable viticulture with a planting density limited to 3500 vines per hectare. The grape varieties planted are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Viognier and more recently Gewürztraminer and Aligoté. Jim Clendenen also buys grapes from well-known vineyards in the region: Bien Nacido, Sanford & Benedict, Los Alamos and Talley.
Unlike many Napa and Sonoma Valley Chardonnays, Jim Clendenen does not seek exuberance in his wines, but rather finesse, balance and complexity, which the cooler climatic conditions of his vineyards favor. Its vinification is done without racking, without sulphur, with total malolactic fermentation in barrels, ageing on lees for 12 to 18 months depending on the cuvée and no filtration. For his Pinot Noir red wines, Jim Clendenen is just as rigorous with long macerations, malolactic fermentation in barrels and no filtration. The fruit is present in a fine and tight structure and the results are up to par with great wines.
