The Commanderie de Peyrassol is a wine estate in Provence that extends over the foothills of the Massif des Maures, on a splendid estate of 850 hectares, including 92 hectares of vines. Protected from the humidity of the sea winds, the estate enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters. The vineyard rises to an altitude of 330 metres and benefits from a wide range of temperatures between day and night, offering perfect ripening of the grapes.
The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soils with a strong predominance of pebbles and dating from the Triassic period, with a wide variety of grape varieties, making it possible to make very beautiful blends in red, with Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tibouren, Merlot, Mourvèdre and Carignan, and in white, with Sémillon, Sauvignon, Clairette, Viognier and Muscat.
The fame of the Commanderie de Peyrassol has spanned more than eight centuries. It was probably founded in 1204 by the Knights Templar, as attested by a 13th century parchment preserved in the archives of the city of Marseille. In 1311, the Order of the Knights of Malta inherited the Commandery of Peyrassol and all the property of the Knights Templar and kept it until 1789. It became a National Property during the Revolution and was acquired by the Rigord family. In the modern era, Doctor Rigord inherited it in 1967 and undertook to replant a large part of the property, then from 1977, Francoise Rigord decided to bottle and market the wines of the Commanderie.
In 2001, Philippe Austruy, a wine enthusiast, bought the property and gave it a new impetus by restructuring the vineyard, planting a first olive grove, creating a new winery and acquiring the Peyrassol land registry. In 2015, he built a new vat room entirely dedicated to red wines.
