The Domaine du Prince is a family-run winery in Cahors located in Cournou, where the Jouves family has been established for more than three centuries. The estate owes its name to one of the ancestors of the family who went to deliver wine to the King of France or the Tsar of Russia and whom the villager nicknamed "Lou Prince" (The Prince) on his return. This nickname is still used by some old families of Cournou. For a long time, it remained a mixed farming and livestock farm, but it was in 1947 that the vine took on its full importance with the planting of Malbec vines. The harvest was first vinified at the Parnac cooperative winery, then in 1971, when the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) was granted to the Cahors vineyard, the Jouves family decided to market their harvest themselves in bottles.
The main grape variety is Malbec or Cot Noir, representing 70% of the Cahors wine blend, complemented by Merlot and Tannat. Malbec gives Cahors wine its tannic character, colour and ageability, Merlot brings roundness and fruitiness, and Tannat reinforces the structure of the wine. A better control of the Malbec grape variety, thanks to grassing and thinning, now makes it possible to produce 100% Malbec wines.
The Domaine du Prince has obtained the certification of the estate in HVE (High Environmental Value). It is now run by Jacques Jouves' two sons, Didier and Bruno. Didier manages the vineyard and more generally the estate while Bruno produces the cuvées, with the help of Léo, Didier's son. .
