Château du Cèdre is a family-run wine estate in the Cahors appellation that extends over 27 hectares of vines planted for 90% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 5% Tannat. Red wines account for nearly 95% of production, to which are added white wines made from the Viognier, Sémillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon grape varieties.
The 3 plots of the estate are made up of the best types of soil in the Cahors appellation: the largest plot extends over 13 hectares and faces south-west on very stony clay-limestone soils called "Tran" while the other two plots, respectively 7.5 and 5.5 hectares, are composed of pebbles mixed with red ferruginous sands on the surface and clay and silica at depth. The former produce straightforward, fine wines and the latter offer more powerful wines.
It was in 1958 that Charles Verhaeghe and his wife Marie-Thérèse, who farm mixed farming land, created the estate by planting one hectare of vines per year on three plots. The family is of Flemish origin, as Charles' father left the Netherlands at the beginning of the 20th century to settle in the Lot. In the early 80s, their sons Jean-Marc and Pascal took over the estate, the former in charge of the vines, the latter of winemaking, ageing and marketing.
In 1995, after a very difficult vintage in which 80% of the estate was decimated by hail, Jean-Marc and Pascal decided to rethink their way of working in the vineyard and in the cellar. Château du Cèdre has been certified organic since 2012: no use of weed killers, short pruning in simple guyot, green harvesting, reduced yields.
