Château Clauzet is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, whose wine is classified as a Cru Bourgeois.
The history of the Château Clauzet vineyard dates back to the mid-19th century, when it was owned by the Bernard family. The current buildings were built during the Second Empire, and it was during this period that the current name of the castle was born. The Féret guide mentions it in its 1868 edition. It was in 1997 that Maurice Velge acquired the estate, only 6 hectares at the time, and then added several plots on the best terroirs of Saint-Estèphe, to reach the current surface area of 23 hectares.
The plots of Château Clauzet are located on the ridge line which, from Margaux to Saint-Estèphe, looks out over the river and constitutes a route of excellence on which the greatest Médoc crus are seated. They are adjacent to the castles Haut-Marbuzet, Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Meyney, Phélan-Ségur, Calon-Ségur, Château de Pez and Les Ormes de Pez. The filtering nature of sandy-gravelly soils forces the roots of the vines to pass through many different geological layers to find water, sometimes at a depth of more than 12 meters.
The variety of these Clauzet soils makes it possible to play with a very rich palette of nuances and to achieve a vast complexity of aromas.
