The Bruno Paillard Champagne House produces great Champagne wines on about 30 hectares spread over 100 plots in 15 crus, including Le Mesnil sur Oger, Oger, Cumières or Verzenay, or the famous Cru des Riceys in the Aube in the south of Champagne. Nearly half of these plots are classified as Grands Crus and the vineyard now supplies nearly 60% of the House's supplies.
Bruno Paillard founded his Champagne House in 1981 and for 40 years has never ceased to defend respect for the land and the Champagne terroir by imposing very rigorous and meticulous tillage and pruning, by paying increasing attention to microbiological life and biodiversity.
Bruno Paillard produces pure, elegant and complex champagnes:
- Blending of more than 40 crus, pressing as close as possible to the vineyard
- Selection of the first presses only (i.e. the first 50 centiliters of each kilo of grapes)
- Reserve wines making up to 50% of the blend (from almost all vintages since 1985) and guaranteeing the style and balance of champagnes without a year (Brut Première Cuvée, Rosé Première Cuvée and Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru)
- Ageing times 2 to 4 times longer than the minimum required by the appellation (from 3 years for the Première Cuvée, up to 8 years, or even 10 years for the Nec Plus Ultra).
Bruno Paillard was born in Reims and his ancestors have been brokers and winemakers in Bouzy and Verzenay since 1704. He started himself as a broker in 1975 and then at the beginning of 1981, at the age of 27, he decided to try to make a champagne himself, without vineyards and without financial resources. The challenge is extremely difficult in this conservative Champagne region that has not seen the birth of a new house for nearly a century. The first champagnes were made with grapes purchased from carefully selected winemakers and Bruno Paillard's very personal style quickly seduced foreign wine lovers. They were then hailed by the Anglo-Saxon press, led by Hugh Johnson, who recognized them among the best wines of Champagne.
In 1994, Bruno Paillard bought his first vines, 3 hectares of Grands Crus in Oger in the Côte des Blancs. He then began to build up a superb vineyard and supplemented his own grapes with purchases from the independent winemakers with whom he had worked for many years. His daughter Alice joined him in 2007 and took over the management of the family business alongside him.
The company has remained independent and exports more than 75% of its production to some thirty countries in Europe, Asia and North America.
