Château des Moines is a Bordeaux wine estate of about twenty hectares in the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation, near the confluence of the Dordogne and Isle rivers.
The grape varieties are 72% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec and the soils are clayey or clayey-silty-gravelly with a subsoil showing traces of iron oxide known in the region as iron grime.
The history of Château des Moines dates back to William Darnajou and the 1930s, with the estate divided between vines, vegetable crops and livestock. From 1960, Henri Darnajou, William's son, developed the vineyard and began to develop the marketing of bottled wines. In 1994, on the death of his father, Jean Darnajou, 4th generation, took over the family farm at the age of 20, which he managed with the help of his mother Colette Darnajou. He perpetuated the family tradition while modernising the winemaking techniques (thermoregulation, pneumatic press, etc.).
In 2004, Jean joined forces with his brother-in-law, Patrick Merle, thus creating the SCEA du Château des Moines, allowing a further expansion of the estate.
