Vega Sicilia is a winery located in the Ribeira Del Duero region of central Castile, Spain, whose appellation of the same name was created in 1982.
It was in 1577 that the name Vega Sicilia appeared for the first time, in reference to the estate, and it was in 1848 that Toribio Lecanda bought the property from the Marquis of Valbuena and began to professionally make wine. At the end of the 19th century, the wines of Vega Sicilia won their first prizes. The 1950s saw the arrival of two important personalities in the history of the estate: Txomin Garramiola and Jesús Anadón.
The Álvarez family acquired Vega Sicilia in April 1982 and in 1991 the winery launched the Alión cuvée, a modern wine, far from the classic Vega Sicilia but from the same appellation Ribera del Duero, and only 15 km from the first vineyard. In 1993, Oremus was born in Hungary, only three years after the fall of communism, an estate reserved for the production of great Tokay wines. In 2001, the Pintia cuvée was born in the Toro region, further downstream on the Duero River and finally in 2013, Vega Sicilia and Benjamin de Rothschild joined forces to produce Macán in the La Rioja region.
In 2014, major modernisation works were carried out to mark the 150th anniversary of the estate and Vega Sicilia obtained the ISO14001 certification, the strictest environmental standard.
Unico is the flagship cuvée of the Vega Sicilia estate, made from a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon.
