In ancient Scottish Gaelic, Glenmorangie means "the valley of tranquillity". The history of Glenmorangie began in 1843 when William Matheson and his wife Anne decided to build a distillery in the Highlands of Scotland: humble beginnings with an extraordinary vision that would take Glenmorangie to the pinnacle of Scotch whisky distilleries.
Among the illustrious figures who took part in the Glenmorangie adventure was Gordon L. Smart, director of the distillery in 1920, following his father in 1920, and who remained so for half a century. It is now Edward Thom who is at the head of Glenmorangie and who in 2022, won the title of "Global Distillery Manager of the year" awarded by the prestigious Whisky Magazine.
