Château Cardinal-Villemaurine is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation, whose vineyard of about ten hectares is spread over three large plots, on different types of soils, clay, limestone and sandy-clay. The grape varieties are 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc
The history of the vineyard begins in the 18th century but its name is much older: the period of the Saracen invasions around 732 gave it its name of Villemaurine, city of the Moors, since there would have been an observation camp for the Moorish armies at this precise place in Saint-Emilion while Cardinal comes from the stay of Cardinal Gaillard de la Mothe, nephew of Bertrand de Goth, former archbishop of Bordeaux, who became Pope in 1305 under the name of Clement V, and who, after tasting the wines of Saint-Emilion, declared them kings of wines.
It has been owned by the Leclérot family since September 2018, and Christine and Alain Leclérot have passed the reins to their youngest son Olivier. In just a few years, they undertook major work to modernise the technical installations, restructure the vineyard and renovate the reception areas.
