SANTA BARBARA

If you want to leave the hustle and bustle of the great vineyards of Napa and Sonoma Valley, here is the Santa Barbara vineyard further south, an area better known for its surf spots and beautiful coastlines but which is curiously one of the coolest wine regions in California, ideal for producing superb Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.

Far from the exuberance and power of many Californian wines, Santa Barbara wines are more about freshness and discretion. The vineyard covers about 6500 hectares, of which a little less than half is Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 12% Syrah and 5% Sauvignon Blanc.

Located between 2 mountain ranges, many vines are planted at altitudes of several hundred meters, up to more than 1000 meters, on very varied soils of limestone, sand and clay silt. Cool westerly winds from the Pacific Ocean rush into the valleys and cool the climate considerably, with temperatures rarely exceeding 25 to 27°C in the west and dropping to 10°C overnight. The harvest period thus extends over the entire month of October, allowing the grapes to reach perfect maturity while maintaining low sugar levels.

The wine appellations of Santa Barbara are: Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Happy Canyon, Lompoc, Los Alamos Valley.
