Serbia, ancient viticulture and autochthonous grape varieties

Although Serbia has been exporting its wines for about twenty years, the winemaking tradition is very old and is based on many autochthonous grape varieties such as Krstač, Župljanka, Smederevka for white wines and Vranac, Prokupac, Kratošija for red wines. The cultivation of Prokupac, the emblematic grape variety of Serbian red wines, has been attested in Serbia since the 14th century.

The main Serbian wine regions

Serbian viticulture is also based on great international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, its vineyard extends over more than 20,000 hectares with a mosaic of wine terroirs and more than 300 estates.

White wines account for 60% and their production is concentrated in the Vojvodina plain in northern Serbia, from which some more confidential rosé wines are also made.

Red wines are mainly produced in the south of Serbia.
