Bordeaux 1994

Bordeaux 1994

After 3 years of difficult climatic conditions, the Bordeaux vineyards experienced a hot, sunny and dry summer in 1994, promising an excellent vintage. However, the heavy rains that fall in September drown the vineyard and most of the wines today are quite austere and lack elegance. A few wines stand out from the crowd, on the right bank in Pomerol and Saint-Emilion where the Merlot was harvested earlier, on the left bank in Pessac-Léognan, mainly white wines and more generally the châteaux who have been able to sacrifice a significant part of their harvest to produce more concentrated wines with longer ageing. The sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac are not of great interest for the most part.

Bourgogne 1994

Burgundy 1994

Quite similar climatic conditions in Burgundy, with a hot and dry summer and a month of rainy harvests, resulted in fairly light wines, generally lacking structure. The estates that harvested at the beginning of September or at the end of the month fared better.

Rhône 1994

Rhône 1994

Beautiful climatic conditions in the north of the Rhône Valley gave very good red wines from Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Joseph in this vintage. In the south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape offers a welcome fine vintage, after the superb 1990 and then three difficult years.

Champagne 1994

Champagne 1994

Poor vintage in Champagne and few or no great vintage champagnes in 1994.

Alsace 1994

Alsace 1994

A vintage also disrupted by the rains in September but a very good success for the Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Tokay Pinot Gris in late harvest and selections of noble grains.

Les autres réussites de 1994

Other successes of 1994

Among the best successes of the 1994 wines are:
- The great red wines of Rioja in Spain with slow maturation, which offer excellent ageing potential. Very good vintage.
- The great red wines of Tuscany in Italy: if Piedmont has experienced similar conditions to the south of France, the great Tuscan wines and Super Tuscans blended with Cabernet and Merlot, grape varieties that were harvested later than Sangiovese offer great successes.
- The red wines of Cahors.
- The natural sweet red wines of Roussillon (Rivesaltes, Maury).
