The guide to the best wines of the 1983 vintage
Are you looking for a wine from 1983 to mark an important date or celebrate an anniversary? La Bouteille Dorée offers you a little practical guide to find your way around these old vintages and to find a bottle from 1983 that will really please its recipient.

Bordeaux 1983
The 1983 vintage is a very good vintage in Bordeaux thanks to a hot and dry spring and summer. The perfect ripeness of the grapes has made it possible to produce wines that are generally powerful and can be kept for a long time, with still intense colour and well-developed aromas. The wines of the Médoc, especially Margaux, are even considered better than the excellent 1982 vintage.

Burgundy 1983
The 1983 vintage was contrasted in Burgundy due to the late spring, hailstorms in July and rains in September, which caused grey rot in part of the vineyard. The necessary sorting of the grapes solved the problem. The red wines are rather tannic, sometimes too much. The white wines are generally more successful.

Rhône 1983
The best vintage of the 80s in the north of the Rhône Valley where the summer was hot and dry with ideal conditions during the harvest. The best red Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie wines offer opulent fruit and a powerful tannic structure, signs of very good ageing potential. The whites of Hermitage still offer a lot of freshness. The abundant rainfall during the harvest is the cause of a more heterogeneous quality in the south, with very good wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Alsace 1983
An exceptional 1983 vintage in Alsace, one of the best of the 20th century: a beautiful and early flowering, a particularly sunny, hot and dry summer, and a dazzling autumn. The density of the musts and the alcohol content that year exceeded the highest levels of previous years and rarely have the winegrowers been able to harvest as in 1983 so many "late harvests" and "selections of noble grains".

Champagne 1983
The 1983 vintage is good in Champagne even if it was rather overshadowed by the success of the 1982 vintage. A harsh winter and a wet spring delayed flowering, but the grapes took place in good conditions. The heat during the summer and then the harvest period allowed the grapes to ripen well.

Other successes of 1983
Among the great successes of the 1983 wines, we can note:
- Brunello's Italian wines (Tuscany).
- Red wines from the northwestern United States, Pinot Noirs from Oregon and Cabernet and Syrah from Washington State.
- The great German Rieslings from the Moselle and the Rhine.
- And you can also turn to the natural sweet red wines of Roussillon, the old wines of Maury and Rivesaltes, which offer a very good ageing potential.
