The guide to the best wines of the 1984 vintage

To be clear, the 1984 vintage produced average, sometimes even quite weak, wines all over the world with the possible exception of parts of Spain and Northern California. Here are some directions to help you find a 1984 wine if you want to give a bottle of 1984 as a birthday gift.

Bordeaux 1984

Bordeaux 1984

The 1984 vintage was a small vintage in Bordeaux due to very difficult weather conditions, especially for the Merlot which flowered poorly. So forget about the wines of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. The wines of the Médoc, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, fared a little better, but the wines were, on the whole, rather meagre.

The rare successes of 1984

The natural sweet red wines of Roussillon, such as in Rivesaltes for example, offer a real gustatory pleasure after more than 30 years in the cellar. On the other hand, the 1984 wines from Burgundy, Rhône and Champagne are not of better quality than in Bordeaux and their overall storage potential remains lower in this vintage than that of Médoc wines.
It is also necessary to leave France to find wines from 1984 offering a good ageing time and instead turn to Spain (Ribeira del Duero) and California which produced that year very good wines but quite difficult to find today.
