The guide to the best wines of the 1969 vintage
Are you looking for a wine from 1969 to mark an important date or celebrate an anniversary? La Bouteille Dorée offers you a little practical guide to find your way around this vintage that is almost 50 years old and to find a bottle from 1969 that will really please its recipient.
Bordeaux 1969
The 1969 vintage was a short year for Bordeaux wines: a rainy spring until June, a little heat in July and August and rain again at the beginning of September. The good weather set in during the harvest but the damage was done, resulting in a very low harvest of average quality. The wines of Bordeaux 1969 are therefore rare due to the small quantities of grapes harvested and can only be tasted, almost 50 years after bottling, in the best Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc, Graves or Saint-Emilion. The sweet white wines of Sauternes are a little more successful and you have to look for the very best classified growths here too.

Burgundy 1969
In contrast to Bordeaux, Burgundy produced good wines in 1969, with a lot of intensity and fruit. The white wines of the Côte de Beaune (Meursault, Puligny, Montrachet) are even more successful than the reds, for which Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny stand out.

Rhône 1969
A fine vintage in the north of the Rhône Valley in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, close in quality to the legendary 1961 vintage. There are also excellent wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape among the best wineries. Wines are scarce and prices are skyrocketing.

Champagne 1969
An excellent vintage in Champagne. The great houses produced vintage cuvées of high quality.

Other successes of 1969
Other successes of the 1969 wines include:
- Alsace: the harvest did not begin until October 13th and it took place under a very beautiful sun which favoured the ripening of the grapes after a rainy spring and early summer. We are particularly looking for sweet white wines, Rieslings and Gewurztraminers, in late harvest and selections of noble grains.
- Loire: the great sweet white wines of the Loire, Coteaux du Layon and Quarts-de-Chaume.
- Roussillon: the natural sweet red wines of Maury and Rivesaltes have survived the half-century very well.
- Italy, 1969 is a fine vintage, especially for the wines of Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino whose grapes were very ripe and whose wines are still highly appreciated today.
