Bordeaux 1980
1980 was a fairly average vintage, marked in Bordeaux by a continuous lack of sunshine until the harvest as well as a wet summer, causing late flowering and incomplete ripening of the grapes. Most of the wines are past their peak but the vineyards of the southern Médoc, Margaux and Graves have fared better because of their soils. The great Sauternes wines are also more successful due to the beautiful weather conditions from October onwards.
Burgundy 1980
Climatic conditions were strongly disrupted in Burgundy by the cold and rain until July. The sun returned in August but the damage was done and the wines remained quite meagre and not very suitable for ageing. Most of them are past their peak but it is possible to find beautiful bottles in the best estates of the Côte-de-Nuits, especially in Vosne-Romanée.
Rhône 1980
Same conditions in the Rhône Valley as elsewhere in France until July then the heat settled on the vineyard both north and south. The abundant harvest was of good quality but the wines did not offer the power and structure to allow a long ageing time and must now be drunk quickly.
Other successes of 1980
Among the few successes of the 1980 wines, we can note:
- Alsace : with one of the lowest harvests in terms of quantity in Alsace, the 1980 vintage was also marked by very late harvests which mainly benefited sweet and sweet white wines, selections of noble grains and late harvests.
- The natural sweet red wines of Roussillon, the old Maury and Rivesaltes.
Few wines from Italy and Spain from 1980 are still appreciable today.
