Bordeaux 1987
In Bordeaux, the month of June 1987 was the wettest since 1966 and delayed flowering, but was fortunately followed by 3 months of hot summer with temperatures comparable to those of 1982 and 1983. From the end of September, the rains began to fall in abundance. The white grape varieties (Sauvignon, Sémillon) and Merlot were harvested before the peaks of precipitation, while the Cabernet Sauvignon had to be harvested between the drops... In the end, it was the discipline and rigour of the great Bordeaux châteaux that made it possible to produce pleasant and well-balanced red wines from 1987, mainly in the north of the Médoc, the Graves, Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. However, they were quite diluted and do not offer a long ageing potential.
Burgundy 1987
Burgundy had a late and delicate flowering due to the humidity and cold in May and June and the very changeable conditions during the summer months, although the harvest was heated. This situation gave fairly light wines that reached maturity and peak quite quickly. Few white and red wines from Burgundy 1987 have survived the last 30 years.
The 1987 vintage elsewhere in France and around the world
- In France, no region was really spared by bad weather conditions and dry white and red wines offer few good surprises. Instead, you will have to turn to the natural sweet reds of Roussillon, the old Maury and Rivesaltes or to some great white wines from Alsace.
- Elsewhere, you have to go quite far to find good wines from 1987, in California in the United States where the 1987 vintage was very successful but well-preserved wines are difficult to find.
