Château Léoville Poyferré is a great wine from Saint-Julien, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in the official classification of Médoc wines of 1855. The 80-hectare vineyard has undergone extensive replanting and restructuring over the past 20 years.
Owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920, Château Léoville Poyferré has been managed by Didier Cuvelier (as well as the Moulin Riche and Le Crock châteaux) since 1979, while his brother Olivier has been managing the H. Cuvelier & Fils trading house founded in 1804 in Bordeaux since 1985.
The origin of the Domaine de Léoville dates back to 1638 and was at the time the largest property in the Médoc, then fragmented over time and generations. It gave birth to the other great estates of Saint-Julien such as Château Léoville Las Cases and Château Léoville Barton. Château Léoville Poyferré was founded in 1840 and was named a Second Grand Cru Classé only 15 years later. The Cuvelier family already owned Château Le Crock in Saint-Estèphe as early as 1913 and acquired Château Léoville, Poyferré and Château Moulin Riche in 1920.
