Château Carbonnieux is a Grand Cru Classé of Graves and is one of the 6 châteaux of the Pessac-Léognan appellation that are Grands Crus Classés in both red and white. The red vineyard of Carbonnieux is planted on a beautiful gravel hilltop that is naturally drained.
Founded by the Benedictines of the Abbey of Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux in the 13th century, Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest wine estates in Bordeaux. Jean de Ferron, a wealthy bourgeois of Bordeaux, acquired the estate in 1519 and transformed the existing fortified farm to give it its current architecture with its high Perigord towers and inner courtyard.
In 1956, Marc Perrin acquired this estate steeped in history, whose title of Cru Classé was confirmed in 1959. He restored the château and proceeded to replant the vineyard, which extended over 45 hectares in 1970 to reach 95 hectares today. Antony Perrin, his son, continued to improve aesthetics and techniques by becoming a very active promoter of the Graves classified growths and the Pessac-Léognan appellation created in 1987. Today, Eric and Philibert, his children, manage the family property and continue to develop the international reputation of its wines.
