ARMENIA

Vins arméniens

Armenia is part of the greater Caucasus area considered to be the oldest viticultural region in the world, 8 millennia old, and which also includes Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey.

The peculiarity of the Armenian vineyard lies first of all in its location at altitude, the lowest point is at 300 meters and the capital Yerevan is at 1000 meters above sea level, with a hot and dry climate due to its very Mediterranean latitude, at the same level as Greece, southern Italy and Spain.

Then it is the local grape varieties that distinguish Armenia, Areni and Karmrahyut for red wines and Kangun for white wines. Today, Areni is recognized as an exceptional grape variety that produces red wines that have nothing to envy to many great European wines.

Finally, it is the vinification and ageing in traditional clay jars or karasi, already used more than 6000 years ago for the fermentation and conservation of wines, that make the reputation of the great Armenian wines.
