Almaviva is a 90-hectare Chilean winery located at high altitude in the Valle de Maipo, in central Chile, in Puente Alto. This terroir offers ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape varieties are composed of Cabernet Sauvignon for 2/3, Carménère for 24%, Cabernet Franc for 8% and Petit Verdot for 2%.
Almaviva was born in 1997 from the merger of the French group Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the Chilean group Viña Concha y Toro with the aim of creating an exceptional Franco-Chilean wine. International success was achieved with the first vintage in 1998.
Almaviva represents the Franco-Chilean alliance well with a Hispanic-sounding name that designates the central character of a classic of French literature, Beaumarchais' "The Marriage of Figaro", which would later serve as the inspiration for Mozart's eponymous opera. The label pays homage to Chile's ancient history and Mapuche civilization.
The soils of the Puente Alto terroir are poor, composed of a thin layer of silty clay that rests on small gravels and rock. These alluvial soils provide the vines with perfect drainage and the wine with its mineral character and its extraordinary elegance and balance.
