Château Vignelaure is a wine estate in Provence, in the Coteaux-d'Aix-en-Provence appellation which extends over 55 hectares of vines in the middle of a magnificent natural ensemble of 200 hectares, straddling the commune of Rians in the Var and Jouques in the Bouches-du-Rhône, between 350 and 400 m above sea level of stony clay-limestone soils. The cool climate with large temperature differences between days and nights, of more than 20 degrees during the ripening phase of the grapes, makes it possible to produce wines with excellent balance and surprising freshness for a terroir in the south of France as well as red, white and rosé wines with great ageing potential.
The vine was already cultivated by the Romans as early as the 1st century B.C. but it was at the end of the 1960s that Château Vignelaure took on its current face under the leadership of Georges Brunet, the former owner of Château la Lagune, a grand cru classé in the Haut-Médoc, who gave it its current name, in reference to the Laura vineyard muse of the poet Petrarch.
Château Vignelaure is a pioneer in the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon in Provence with the first plantings in 1966 from the grafts of La Lagune, followed by Syrah and Grenache to be blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. The first vintage was released in 1970, in red only. The vinification of rosé wines began in 1992 and then in 2013 for the whites. Eloi Dürrbach, founder of the Domaine de Trévallon in Les Baux-de-Provence in 1973, vinified for two years at Château Vignelaure and was inspired by this experience to produce magnificent wines made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
After several owners, Château Vignelaure passed in 2007 into the hands of Mette and Bengt Sundstrom, a dynamic Scandinavian couple, who launched a vast restructuring program with the planting of the first white grape varieties, the conversion of the vineyard to organic farming, and the equipping of the cellar with small vats to be able to create plot selections.
