Château Rayas is a small winery in the southern Rhône Valley that produces wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, on ten hectares of vineyards surrounded by woods. The grape varieties grown are Grenache Noir for red wines and Grenache Blanc et Gris and Clairette for white wines.
Château Rayas is distinguished by its poor and very sandy soils, without the traditional pebble beds found elsewhere in the appellation), which give the wines a lot of finesse. Very low yields of 18 to 20 hectolitres per hectare, dThe very rigorous vinification and long ageing of at least 20 months in old oak barrels contribute to making Château Rayas exceptional wines.
Château Rayas is run by Emmanuel Reynaud, like Château des Tours and Château de Fonsalette in the Côtes du Rhône appellation, and produces some of the greatest wines in the world-renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
The adventure of Château Rayas began with Albert Reynaud, a notary in the vicinity of Avignon, who had to change careers for health reasons, and who bought the Rayas vineyard in 1880. His son Louis began bottling at the estate in 1920 and bought the Domaine des Tours located in Sarrians in 1938 and then the Château de Fonsalette located north of Orange in Lagarde-Paréol in 1945. Jacques Reynaud succeeded his father in 1978 and paid particular attention to the soils in the production of the various vintages he supervised. His sudden death in 1997 prompted his nephew Emmanuel, who was already running the Domaine des Tours, to take over Rayas and Fonsalette.
