Ravines Wine Cellars is a small family winery of about 40 hectares located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York in the United States. The vines are planted on limestone and schist soils, on steep slopes, and benefit from excellent drainage. The estate's flagship grape varieties are Riesling in white and Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc in red. There are also Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Blaufrankisch.
The story of Ravines Wine Cellars began in 2001 when Morten and Lisa Hallgrens moved to the Finger Lakes region. Morten is Danish by birth and was raised in France, in the family winery of Castel Roubine in Provence. He studied oenology and viticulture at the University of Montpellier and met Lisa, who was a chef. Morten cut his teeth at Château Cos d'Estournel in Saint-Estèphe in the Médoc and then in the United States from 1998 as cellar manager at Dr. Konstantin Frank Cellars, one of the pioneers of Finger Lakes viticulture.
Over the past twenty years, the estate's team has acquired a very good knowledge of the grape varieties and plots in order to make the most of the potential of the terroir. Since 2018, the estate has banned herbicides, insecticides and other chemical inputs and is committed to improving soil quality by limiting soil erosion.
