Grace Winery is a twenty-hectare Japanese winery located at the foot of Mount Fuji in Katsunuma, Yamanashi Prefecture. The terroir is ideal for vines with four distinct seasons, significant temperature differences between winter and summer, very good sunshine and soils at altitude.
Grace Winery's vineyards are spread across several regions around Katsunuma:
- Hishiyama is one of the highest wine-growing regions in Katsunuma, with vines planted between 500 and 600 meters above sea level, on soils composed of large granite rocks and small clay pebbles, which are very suitable for the production of white, lively and aromatic wines.
- Toriibira is a small wine region located at 450 meters above sea level on the southwestern slope of Mount Kashio, long recognized as one of the best in Katsunuma for the production of deep and complex white wines.
- Akeno, where "Misawa Vineyard" is located, is a wine region located 700 meters above the city of Akeno, surrounded by Mount Kayagatake, Mount Yatsugatake and Mount Fuji, which enjoys exceptional sunshine for the production of concentrated wines and well balanced by perfect acidity.
- Kayagatake is a wine region located on the slopes of the eponymous Mount, where Koshu vines are planted between 400 and 700 meters above sea level and produce the most delicate Koshu wines.
Grace Winery is renowned for the production of Koshu wines, a grape variety native to Japan, native to the South Caucasus and of which little is known about the conditions of its transport to the distant Japanese islands. In 2010, it was the first Japanese grape variety to be registered with the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (O.I.V.).
In the vineyard, herbicides and chemical fertilizers have been banned for several years and in 2016, a first step towards conversion to organic farming was launched. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, in small boxes, and the grapes are sorted extremely rigorously. Since 2020, Grace Winery has been the first winery in Japan to use indigenous yeasts for fermentation.
The story of Grace Winery began in 1923 when the estate was founded by Chotaro Misawa in Katsunuma, at the foot of Mount Fuji. The "Grace" cuvées were launched in 1953 by Kazuo Misawa, the 3rd generation of the family, and the first vintage was born in 1957. A new winery was installed in 1980 and in 1987, the estate produced the first Japanese wine under the appellation, Katsunuma GI. In 1989, Shigekazu Misawa, who represents the 4th generation, took the reins of the estate and launched the emblematic "Cuvée Misawa" and the wines of Koshu, Japan's flagship grape variety. The year 2002 saw the creation of the new vineyard "Misawa Vineyard" on 8.6 hectares in Akeno in Yamanashi Prefecture. In 2004, the production of Koshu wines at the estate was supervised by Professor Dubourdieu and in 2009, the name "Koshu of Japan" was born, which includes 15 estates in Yamanashi, presided over by Shigekazu Misawa. This was the beginning of a great adventure for the estate's Koshu wines, which won multiple international medals. The year 2016 saw the launch of the first sparkling wine with "Grace Extra Brut". Ayana Misawa represents the 5th generation of the family and is now at the head of the production of the estate's wines.
