Domaine Auguste Clape is a wine estate in the northern Rhône Valley, which covers nearly 9 hectares, 85% red (Syrah) in the Cornas appellation, and 15% white (Marsanne 12% and Roussanne 3%) in the Saint-Peray appellation.
The estate advocates simple vinification in whole bunches and long maturation in barrels of several wines. The wines perfectly express the terroir of Cornas and are now recognized as references of the appellation and the north of the Rhône Valley.
The history of the estate dates back to the beginning of the 19th century when the Frugier family began to cultivate vines and cereals. In 1865, phylloxera ravaged the vineyard and in 1890, even if Henri Frugier managed to revive 2 hectares of vines, the First World War that followed completed the destruction of the wine estate, which was then replaced by cereal cultivation. In 1925, Antoinette Frugier inherited the estate and decided to make wine again that she sold to the merchants. It was in 1949 that the estate began its resurrection under the leadership of her daughter Ariette and her husband, Auguste Clape, with 4 hectares of vines and the decision to bottle their own wines. In the seventies, they became known elsewhere in France and abroad, particularly in England and the United States. This prosperous period, marked by the international recognition of their wines, pushed Antoinette and Auguste Clape to invest, by expanding the vineyard on the hillsides. Their son Pierre joined the estate in 1988, after having cut his teeth at the Tempier and Vieux Télégraphe estates and continued his parents' work, before his own son Olivier joined in 2002. .
