Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Grand Cru Classé from Graves, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation that produces white and red wines. As early as 1365, the noble house of Bosq had chosen this terroir to cultivate a vineyard, then in the 18th century, the Scotsman George Smith bought the estate, attached his name to it, built the Chartreuse and exported the already renowned barrels to England on his ships.
At the beginning of the century, Maison Louis Eschenauer became aware of the exceptional quality of this wine and ensured its dissemination, finally buying the property in 1958. Since then, significant investments have been made, including the construction of a superb underground cellar that can be used to age more than 1000 barrels at the same time.
In 1990, Daniel Cathiard fell in love with the vineyard and joined the prestigious line of owners with the firm intention of continuing to promote this noble wine. His constant quest for excellence leads him to harmoniously handle the most modern winemaking techniques with traditional methods: living soils, organic compost, return to small oak vats, ageing on lees in barrels.
In 2019, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is certified in Organic Farming, after 3 years of conversion. Since 2015, the estate has also implemented the principles of biodynamic agriculture and promotes medicinal plants to prevent vine diseases, cultivates its own plants and strengthens biodiversity by preserving forests, orchards, beehives and vegetable gardens.
Without a doubt, the exemplary elegance of Smith Haut Lafitte's red wines as well as the sophisticated bouquet of its world-renowned white deserve this daily care.
