Pinotage is a South African grape variety that accounts for about 6% of South Africa's vineyard area. It is the result of a cross of 2 grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Cinsault, made by Abraham Herold in 1825.

How do you recognise Pinotage wines?
If in creating Pinotage, Abraham Herold's initial objective was to be able to make wines with a structure and an aromatic palette close to that of Pinot Noir in the hot South African climate, the result is actually quite different. Pinotage offers its own characteristics with aromas of red fruits but also powerful aromas of black fruits (blackberry, black cherry) and light notes of spices and mint. The best Pinotage wines from renowned estates such as Kanonkop in the Stellenbosch region offer wines for laying down that after a decade or so evolve into meaty and blond tobacco aromas.

The vast majority of Pinotage wines are to be drunk young, within 5 years. However, some great wines from the best estates can be kept for up to 20 years.
