Marie-Thérèse Chappaz is a winemaker based in Fully in the Valais region of Switzerland. Viticulture has been present in Switzerland in the Valais region since the Gallo-Roman period 2000 years ago. As early as the 14th century, there are traces of the Petite Arvine, Humagne blanche, Rèze and Cornalin grape varieties.
The estate was founded in the 1940s by Maurice Troillet, Marie-Thérèse Chappaz's great-uncle. After a short experience in the hospital environment, she moved there in 1987 while successfully completing a higher education in viticulture and oenology at the Ecole de Changins. She took over the family vineyards, one and a half hectares at the time, starting by selling the grapes and then the following year, vinified her first vintage. She then undertook to expand the vineyard, which now covers 10 hectares.
It was in 1997 during a visit to Domaine Chapoutier in Tain-L'Hermitage in France that Marie-Thérèse decided to convert her estate to biodynamics. Since 2003, the entire Domaine Chappaz has been cultivated biodynamically and is now certified Demeter and Bio-bourgeon Suisse by bio-inspecta AG. Marie-Thérèse Chappaz advocates the minimum of interventions and inputs: in the vineyard, no synthetic products or fertilizers, only herbal teas, homemade compost, plants, biodynamic preparations and a very low use of copper and natural sulphur from mines. In the cellar, indigenous yeasts, no sugar, no enzymes, sulphites in very small quantities and not in all wines.
All around the estate and in the vineyards, Marie-Thérèse Chappaz has planted many fruit trees to create plant diversity: peach, apricot, mirabelle plum, strawberry trees, plum trees, olive trees, fig trees, almond trees, quince trees as well as willows for herbal teas, all trees that also serve as relays for birds on 10 hectares. In 2023, for the first time, a Swiss wine was awarded a score of 100 points in the Robert Parker Wine Advocate guide: the Grain par Grain cuvée from Petite Arvine 2020 vintage. In 2021, Marie-Thérèse Chappaz was elected Best Swiss Winemaker of the Year 2021 by the Association of Sommeliers of German-speaking Switzerland.
