WHAT OCCASIONS IS A METHUSELAH OF WINE OR CHAMPAGNE SUITABLE FOR?

HOW MUCH DOES A METHUSELAH HOLD?

A Methuselah is a large-size glass bottle that holds the equivalent of eight bottles of wine or eight 75cl bottles of Champagne, or a total of 600cl. A Methuselah bottle weighs approximinately 15 kilograms. In Bordeaux, the name Methuselah does not apply to large 6-litre bottles. These are called an Imperial. Some rare Imperial bottles can contain 5.25 litres, or the exact equivalent of seven 75-cl wine bottles.

HOW MUCH DOES A METHUSELAH OF WINE OR CHAMPAGNE COST?

With a Methuselah of wine, the cost of the glass has a bearing on the price of the bottle. The additional cost of producing a Methuselah is approximately 70 to 100 euros compared to the sale price of eight 75-litre bottles, or an additional cost per bottle of 9 to 12 euros. This is why this bottle size is reserved for fine wines: a Methuselah of Champagne, or a Methuselah of fine Burgundy or an Imperial of a grand cru classé Médoc is easier to find than a 6-litre bottle of a local wine. 

WHERE DOES THE NAME METHUSELAH FOR A BOTTLE OF WINE COME FROM? 

The name of this size of bottle comes from Methuselah, who according to the Book of Genesis, lived for 969 years and died during the Flood. The name of this patriarch, and the oldest person mentioned in the Old Testament, is synonymous with longevity.
