Kanonkop, the "cannon shot" is a name inherited from local history: a cannon shot was fired to warn the population of the arrival of a merchant ship in Cape Town. The estate was founded in 1910 by the Sauer family. Johann and Paul Krige, the fourth generation of the family, now run the Kanonkop estate together with Abrie Beeslar, who has been in charge of the vinification since her arrival in 2002.
It was in the 80s and 90s, at the height of Apartheid and when the country was in total economic and political isolation, that the estate began to make a name for itself and prove to the world the potential of South Africa to produce quality wines. The red wines of Kanonkop are still among the best South African wines with a dimension of finesse and an ageing ability almost unique in the country.
The vineyard is located at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountains, less than 10 km north of the town of Stellenbosch on hills rising to 120 metres. It covers about a hundred hectares planted with old vines (50 years old for the most part), only red grape varieties, with in order of importance Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The control of yields and the search for the right maturity are the 2 essential concerns in the vine.
In the cellar, Domaine Kanonkop remains faithful to the old traditional concrete vats in which the grapes are still crushed by foot and long maturation is favoured with a reasoned use of new wood. The sensation that emanates from the red wines of Kanonkop is one of great elegance and always irreproachable balance.
