Domaine Michel Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Les Granits Rouge 1998

Domaine Michel Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Les Granits Red 1998

120.00 € Tax included

This 1998 Saint-Joseph Les Granits from Domaine Michel Chapoutier comes from a Syrah vineyard located around Tournon, in the villages of Mauves, Saint-Jean de Muzols and Lemps. In the 19th century, this wine was known as Mauves wine and was enjoyed as far away as Russia at the table of the tsars.

It offers a beautiful nose of very ripe black fruits with smoky and peppery notes that can be found on the palate with a very long persistence. This single-vineyard cuvée is renowned for its very long ageing potential, from 30 to 60 years, or even up to 75 years in exceptional vintages.

The year 1998 saw a very dry summer that narrowly escaped drought thanks to life-saving rains in September. These rains slowed down the ripening of the grapes and finally allowed a very good quality harvest. If the red wines of the north of the Rhône Valley do not reach the exceptional quality of those of the south, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in particular where 1998 is one of the best vintages of the century, they offer in the great appellations, Saint-Joseph, Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, beautiful concentrated and well-structured wines.
