Created in 1876 for the Tsar of Russia Alexander II, the Cristal cuvée is the great prestige vat of the House of Louis Roederer. It is only madein the best years, when the maturity of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, respectively 40% and 60% of the blend, is perfect.

Cristal 1996 is incredibly intense, invigorating, powerful and complex. The nose is initially dominated by fruity aromas that are still very present despite its age (ripe pear and apple, apricot, candied lemon, orange zest), followed by mineral notes, smoky notes, hazelnut and pastries. On the palate, the attack is concentrated and its silky texture is enveloped by a very nice chalky freshness, then a very long, slightly saline finish. In this exceptional vintage, Cristal was aged for 10 years in the cellar followed by 10 years after disgorging in the bottle, in search of the perfect balance.

In Champagne, the year 1996 saw low rainfall throughout the development of the vines, and all the Champagne grape varieties, Chardonnay in the lead, gave small grapes and therefore low yields which allowed an exceptional concentration of aromas. The ripening of the grapes continued ideally until the harvest with fruit marked by a very high sugar content and acidity. Probably the best vintage of Champagne in the last fifty years!
