SECOND WINES
The second wines are wines made by the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc and Saint-Emilion and by the great estates of Pomerol, generally from younger vines and plots that cannot be retained for great wines. The second wines benefit from the fame of their elders and it is the same teams who vinify them and supervise their ageing.
Château Pichon-Longueville, Pauillac's 2nd Grand Cru Classé, was the first to produce a second wine, which he sent to the Moscow Exhibition in 1874, closely followed by Château Margaux, which in 1908 launched Pavillon de Margaux, which has since become the Pavillon Rouge.
But it is really since the beginning of the 80s that second wines have taken off and the craze was such that their prices soared spectacularly in the 2 decades that followed. Fortunately, since 2011, the speculative bubble on these wines has deflated and second wines are once again offering good deals.
